Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band's third Piccadilly LP forgoes the live setting of its predecessors for the studio, but the contextual shift does little to dampen their energy and vitality: Shake a Tail Feather Baby is a celebration of the Memphis soul sound as raw and as raucous as they come. After toying with Motown covers on previous efforts, Washington remains squarely south of the Mason-Dixon line this time out, drawing on Stax classics like "Raise Your Hand," "Knock on Wood" and "Who's Foolin' Who"--the gritty sincerity of his vocals is particularly well suited for the deep soul idiom, and the Ram Jam Band is a force of nature. BMG's 2007 reissue appends seven bonus cuts, including "Each and Every Part of Me" and "Dirty Dirty." AMG.
